COMPUTERS
Computer Education in
the Middle School is for 10 weeks for sixth grade students.
The focus is on
mastering the keyboard. The course endeavors to further the students’
understanding of keyboarding. Topics covered include reviewing the
keyboard, practicing, introduction to terms, formatting, introduction to
draw and paint, and typing letters and reports. In addition, one
assignment accesses the internet.
FAMILY AND
CONSUMER SCIENCES
Family and Consumer
Science education in the Middle School is for 30 weeks. We
divide this timeframe between the three grade levels. This constitutes
10 weeks per each of the three grades (6, 7, and 8). The course’s name
is Home and Career Skills. It is designed to help adolescents
live in a society of constant change and to improve their quality of
life by preparing them to meet their present and future responsibilities
as family members, consumers, home managers, and wage earners.
In sixth grade, the
topics of study include: process skills (decision-making skills,
problem-solving skills, management skills), personal development
(self-assessment, adolescence, and character education), personal &
family resource management (clothing care, personal environment), and
machine sewing skills.
In seventh grade, the
topics of study include: process skills review, personal development
(child development, adolescence, the elderly), and personal & family
resource management (consumerism, nutrition management). The students
also study the food pyramid, essential nutrients, food-borne illnesses,
food preparation, safety, and sanitization.
In eighth grade, the
topics of study include: process skills review, personal & family
resource management (money management), and career planning
(introduction to the world of work, interests and abilities,
self-assessment, career exploration, job shadow experience,
entrepreneurship).
TECHNOLOGY

Technology education
in the Middle School is for 40 weeks. We divide this period between the
two grade levels. This constitutes 20 weeks in 7th grade, and
20 weeks in 8th grade. In seventh grade, the students study
wood processes and products, as well as, machinery. During eighth grade,
the students complete their Middle School technology education with
study in communications, energy, consumerism, and bridge building. 7th
