Spring
sunflower lesson continues giving
Talk
about a lesson that keeps on giving.
Student's in Kathy Wolfe's second grade
art classes learned last spring about
Vincent Van Gogh's fixation with sun
flowers and to mark Pieter B. Coeymans
Elementary School's habitat Day last
spring, they each received sun flower
seeds to plant.

Haylee Wallace stands next
to the head of the sunflower
plant she grew this summer. |
Most of
the seeds grew into full blown flowers
that provided beauty to the homes of the
students last summer.
Then
there was Haylee Wallace's sunflower.
The flower grew and grew and grew,
reaching approximately 12 feet over the
summer and creating one of the largest
sunflowers many have seen
"It was
huge," Haylee said.
While
the flower eventually died, it is still
providing a lesson for students and
excitement for the school,
This
week, Haylee brought the sizable head of
the flower to school and Wolfe has
placed it on display outside her
classroom amidst her student's own
versions of Van Gogh's sunflower
paintings.
The
plant's head is the size of Hayley's
head and torso, which of course draws
the attention of passerby in the
school's hallway.
Wolfe
said the plant head will be used later
this year in science classes and the
seeds will be used for future sun flower
projects with students.
