Active Reading
Good readers actively think while they read. With the right equipment (pencil, Reading Log, novel), you can master all you read.
When we read Soldier’s Heart, by Gary Paulsen, you will be using the Active Reading strategies. There are 10 chapters in Soldier’s Heart; you will be required to keep a log for all 10 of them. Each log will be worth a total of 10 points. At the end, the points will go towards a cumulative test grade worth 100 points. It is crucial that you keep a detailed log with all the necessary requirements to earn a good grade.
Each Reflection Log needs to be filled out completely. Once you are finished reading a chapter, or while you are reading the chapter, you will focus on the following Active Reading Strategies for each Log:
· Question
· Predict
· Summarize
· Connect
· Visualize
Each strategy will be used once in each chapter.
Things to keep in mind:
ü if you are referring to a specific passage, be sure to make note of it in your Log
ü responses should be insightful, creative and detailed
ü THIS COUNTS AS A TEST GRADE! If you take this assignment seriously and complete all requirements, you will easily earn a high score! J
