Just a gentle reminder that the District’s email system should be used for school business and educational purposes.

You may use it for occasional personal use, however, please refrain from subscribing to large mailing lists such as Macy’s, J.C. Penny’s or L.L Bean.  Also, do not use the RCS Email system to advertise personal items for sale or to conduct any type of non-school business activities.

The size of staff mailboxes has been steadily growing. I haven’t put any limit on the size, but would ask everyone to please delete messages that are no longer needed. Remember that a deleted message is moved to your Deleted Items folder. To completely delete it from the Email system, right click on the deleted items folder and select “empty deleted items”.

Staff may access other Email systems from computers located in the faculty rooms at each building.

Loading, downloading, copying or duplicating music

Is it ok for me to have digital music or movie files on my computer?

Sometimes.

A little background first. Digital music files are obtained in different ways. They can be downloaded legally from many different music sites or illegally from music sharing services. Additionally, many software programs will copy or “rip” music from a CD to a digital music file. For example, Apple’s ITunes program will take any CD and copy it to a digital music file format on your Hard Drive. This music can then be transferred to a portable device like an IPod.

We have been noticing an increase in the number of school computers with various types of digital music files. Some of these files have been downloaded while others are entire albums copied from CD’s. It is impossible for us to determine the legality of digital music, therefore have adopted guidelines to help answer this question.

-          All Copyrighted Digital Music or Video will follow the Fair Use Guidelines For Educational Multimedia. Most, if not all, of the major U.S. owners of copyrighted material helped to produce these guidelines and many have already agreed to endorse the document.  Please review these guidelines and share with your students at http://www2/technology/fairuse.htm.

-          Copyrighted Digital Music or Video files should only loaded on RCS computer stations for educational, curriculum-based purposes. I.e., the digital multimedia is directly related to your class work and will be used in class or in a student presentation.

-          RCS Computer equipment will not be used to download, rip, copy or duplicate copyrighted multimedia in any way. This includes copyrighted CD’s and DVD’s.

-          You may use the RCS computer to play CD’s or DVD’s that are original, not copies.
