What You Need To Know About Standardized State Testing:

Why does my child have to take these tests?

Under Federal No Child Left Behind all states must test students grades 3 through 8 in ELA and Math.  Test results will determine if a school is making Adequate Yearly Progress toward student achievement goals determined by the state.

The New York State Math Assessment will be administered in April.

What’s on the New York State Math Assessment?

62 multiple choice questions

9 open-ended questions that require students to show, and sometimes explain, how they arrived at their answer.

graphs, tables, and pictures to read and interpret

Students must recognize and use signs, symbols and terms that represent mathematical concepts.  They must also be able to complete calculations without a calculator for a portion of this test.

How can you help your child?

Require your child to complete homework assignments, and respond in detail to writing assignments.

Stay in contact with your child’s teacher.
